Client: Cengage

Audience: Secondary school students

Description

Cengage, an education and technology publishing company, developed new content for a range of products written for the new Australian curriculum.

Scientell edited dozens of chapters in the Nelson Science and Science in Focus series of textbooks. Our editing aimed to refine the content and activities in the textbooks to ensure that they were engaging, accessible and written with a consistent voice. As part of our approach, Scientell checked the science, suggested additional or alternative content, and identified any gaps.

Scientell reviewed the scientific accuracy of a variety of chapter topics, including:

  • the scientific process, data, and scientific classification
  • the Earth, Sun and Moon
  • atoms and elements; forces and energy
  • cell theory and systems in bodies and plants
  • minerals and the structure of Earth.

Our editing focussed on accessibility and readability of language, ensuring language was pitched at the right level and avoided unnecessary use of complex words. We ensured a consistent, engaging and direct tone, and identified any duplication of content.

Innovative Features

The ePub platform allows students to see a modified version of the book text if they require simpler language. Importantly, Scientell’s subject matter experts focussed on the accuracy of the scientific content and the clear development of concepts in the revised text.
