Scientell Wrapped 2024

Scientell Wrapped 2024

When this time of year rolls around, there’s a lot to look forward to: Christmas, food, Christmas food.

Now, you can now also look forward to our annual Scientell Wrapped – our new review of the year.

Scientell Wrapped 2024 celebrates some of the science stories we’ve helped share this year, from climate change snapshots to science communication training. We’ve worked with researchers, decision-makers, and communicators across government, academia and the private sector to turn science into stories that inform, engage, and inspire.

So, let’s dive into Scientell Wrapped – including the projects, partnerships, and moments that made this a year for the books.

List of statistics from Scientell's work in 2024, including 40+ projects, 20+ organisations, 170+ training participants and 4 conferences.

This year, we…

… worked on more than 40 projects.

In the past 12 months, we’ve worked on 41 projects in various formats – bringing our total number of projects since Scientell was founded in 2015 to over 350! Our projects in 2024 ranged from case studies about fisheries research, a toolkit to help communities adapt to climate change, science communication training, and an activity booklet for National Science Week. The diversity of the projects we work on and the unique challenges they bring are part of what makes our job so enjoyable.

… worked with over 20 different organisations

This year, we collaborated with 24 organisations – including new and repeat business – across government, academia, and the private sector.

We helped state governments communicate key climate insights, such as through the climate projections snapshots for the NSW Government, and the Victorian Climate Science Report 2024 for the Victorian Government.

We helped bring research stories to life to amplify their impact through our work with government-funded research facilities under the National Research Collaborative Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), such as the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and National Computational Infrastructure (NCI).

This year we also collaborated with universities and research institutions, including the Centre for Biosecurity and Risk Analysis (CEBRA) at the University of Melbourne, St Vincent’s Institute for Medical Research, the Oceans Institute at the University of Western Australia, and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC), working on a range of science communications products and services.

… provided science communication or presentation training to almost 200 researchers.

Our training workshops helped over 170 researchers sharpen their science communication and presentation skills. Our training sessions covered topics such as science communication foundations, visual communications, and presentation skills, with interactive hands-on exercises and tips and tricks.

…attended 4 conferences.

The Scientell team attended various conferences this year to develop our skills, network, share our knowledge, and learn the latest in science and science communication. In February this year, Alysha delivered a visual communication workshop at VicBioCon 2024, with hands-on components that had biology researchers sketching infographic ideas and designing them on Canva. Simon and Cintya flew to Perth in June to attend the Australian Science Communicators conference, where they met with like-minded communicators from across the country. Simon and Cintya also represented Scientell as the official media partner at the International CleanUp 2024 conference in Adelaide. Recently, Sonia was in Sydney for the 2024 AdaptNSW Forum, connecting with collaborators and friends, old and new, and learning about advances in climate adaptation.

Whether we were leading workshops, supporting media efforts, networking or soaking up the latest in science and communication, these conferences were a highlight of our year.

… and collectively drank over 2,000 cups of coffee meeting with colleagues

Kidding, but it’s probably close. If you’d like to catch up for a coffee in Melbourne, Adelaide or Canberra in 2025, please let us know!

As 2024 draws to a close, we’re grateful for the clients, collaborators, and supporters who have made this year so rewarding. With the death of Scientell co-director Paul Holper in September this year, the support from our community has been a huge comfort to our team during this challenging time.

We hope to stay connected with you in the new year. Get in touch at info@scientell.com.au or sign up to our newsletter.
