Scientell worked with a Melbourne bayside council and community to co-design a self-preparedness kit and map to help inform and support resilience to extreme weather events.
Client: Bayside City Council
Audience: Older community members vulnerable to climate change, local councils.
Description
The Bayside City Council and community met at a workshop facilitated by Authentic Co-design to identify locations, facilities and assets suitable for older community members to access during extreme weather. The focus was on heat and power outages.
Scientell worked with the council and volunteer older residents to co-design a self-preparedness kit and map of places to stay cool, to support resilience to extreme weather events. The work, part of a larger project for the South East Councils Climate Change Alliance (SECCCA), focussed on heat and power outages.
The participants listed and mapped areas where people could to stay cool and shelter from extreme weather. Participants also developed an extreme weather readiness self-assessment checklist. The checklist prompts discussion about locating nearby safe places, preparing to stay safe during extreme weather events, identifying gaps and future planning needs, and building greater resilience.
Bayside City Council launched the brochure at an event during the Victorian Seniors Festival 2024.
Scientell worked with Soggy Brolly design to develop the map and checklist into a single, A3 brochure, which could be folded into a convenient envelope size. The final brochure was provided to SECCCA for use as a template in other Councils, and supplied to Bayside Council for finalisation and distribution, including as a printable PDF, an accessible online PDF, and an online PDF that could be downloaded and printed at home.
